Dr. Naimish Mehta, a Senior Liver Transplant Surgeon has been instrumental in development of the Liver Transplant programme at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital over the past decade. He gained extensive training in Liver transplantation from various centres of excellence in UK and USA and is recognized as an Expert in the filed of Hepato-Biliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation worldwide. He has experience of over 1000 liver transplants cases and has also been awarded Diploma in Liver Transplantation by the European Board of Surgery and Fellowships from academic institutes. He has delivered various lectures in the filed of Liver transplantation and is an invited faculty in academic meetings in India and abroad. He is the only Indian Transplant surgeon serving as a faculty in Certified Course in Liver Transplantation surgery conducted by European Society of Organ Transplantation.

He is a member of various academic societies and has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals. His credits include performing successful Liver Transplantation in smallest weighing child of 4.5 kg, performing the first living donor intestinal transplantation in India, Dual Lobe Liver transplantation where two donors donate liver to a single individual, Liver Transplantation in Acute Liver failure in pregnant women and many such cases.

Current Position

Consultant Surgeon, Liver Transplantation & Surgical Gastroenterology Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi 110060, 15th December 2008 to till date

Liver Transplant programme at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is one of the largest programme in India performing both cadaveric and living donor liver transplants. It is comparable to any other international liver transplant centre. The living donor liver transplant programme attracts patients from around the world. We have one of the lowest Vascular and Biliary complications rate following Living donor liver transplant.

In addition to liver transplantation, major hepato-pancreato-biliary and other gastrointestinal surgeries are also performed. Over 725 liver transplantation surgeries have been performed with many firsts to its credit.

Previous Positions

Fellowship in HPB and Transplantation Surgery, 9th January 2008 – 14th December 2008., St. James University Hospital, Leeds, UK.

Work description: Participating in on-call specialist registrar rota, lead the multi organ retrieval team, back bench preparation of liver for OLT, ex-situ splitting of the liver allograft, liver implantation and HPB surgery. Also participate in work-up and surgery for living donor liver transplantation.

Fellowship in Liver transplantation, 2nd October 2006 – 30th September 2007, Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead, London. UK

Work description: Managing outpatient clinics and participating in multi-organ retrieval and major HPB surgeries.

Fellowship in HPB and Liver Transplantation Surgery, 12th June 2005 – 8th September 2006, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham, UK.

It is a tertiary referral centre for complex HPB cases and one of the largest adult and paediatric liver transplant centre in Europe.

Work description: Participating in on-call rota and involved in multi organ retrievals, back bench preparation of liver for OLT, liver transplantation and HPB surgery. Also gained experience in ex-situ splitting of the liver allograft.
